Review basis: Researched on 8 October 2026 using FinChoice’s official MobiMoney product page and calculator, credit terms, Personal Protection Plan policy, affordability guidance, privacy policy and contact information. FinChoice Africa Ltd’s NCRCP8162 registration was checked in the NCR register. This review covers MobiMoney, a credit facility with short repayment periods.

FinChoice MobiMoney short-term credit review

  • Provider and product: A credit facility from FinChoice; the published agreement identifies FinChoice Africa Ltd, NCRCP8162. It provides access to smaller amounts for temporary expenses.
  • Amounts and repayment: Advertised withdrawals of R100–R10,000, subject to qualification and available credit, with repayment over 1, 2 or 3 months.
  • Interest and APR: The public calculator displays 21.25% annual interest. This is not an all-inclusive APR; a separate APR was not identified in the materials inspected. Confirm your contractual rate.
  • Fees and insurance: No application fee, but borrowing carries interest, initiation and service fees, and required credit life cover under the published policy. Premiums, benefits and exclusions depend on the applicable policy and quotation.
  • Eligibility and application: Apply through FinChoice’s official MobiMoney channel. Credit, affordability and verification checks apply, alongside income evidence and a repayment mandate.
  • Best suited to: A temporary cash shortfall that can be repaid without borrowing again. The main limitation is the concentrated repayment burden: fees and insurance can make a small withdrawal materially more expensive than the interest rate suggests.
Founder perspective

Alexander Balanoff on FinChoice

With FinChoice MobiMoney, I would focus on the combined repayments from your withdrawals, not just the cost of the next one. Each withdrawal can look manageable separately, while together they leave too little for the rest of the month. Before drawing again, add the new repayment to what you already owe and check whether you can cover everyday expenses afterwards. At LoansPlus, we encourage that comparison because repaying credit and then immediately borrowing again can conceal a continuing shortfall. The useful question is whether you can clear the borrowing and get through the following month without replacing it.

FinChoice MobiMoney eligibility and documents

The MobiMoney activation form requests your name, ID number, cellphone number, email address, employment status and net salary, plus permission for a credit bureau enquiry. Submitting these details does not establish approval.

  • Affordability: Declare income, household expenses and existing financial commitments accurately. The approved limit depends on FinChoice’s assessment.
  • Income evidence: FinChoice’s published guidance requests your three most recent payslips, bank statements or pension slips before funds are transferred. Follow the document requirements issued for your application.
  • Banking and verification: Provide the requested banking details, complete verification and arrange the repayment mandate.

A universal minimum salary or credit-score threshold was not verified in the inspected sources. FinChoice’s privacy policy explains its credit, fraud and affordability checks and warns that a credit enquiry may appear on your credit profile even if the application is unsuccessful.

Who MobiMoney suits

MobiMoney may suit someone whose income can cover a specific temporary expense over the next few pay cycles. Its usefulness depends on the cash left after each repayment, rather than the size of the available limit.

Reconsider if repayments would force another withdrawal for ordinary living costs. Compare the total repayment with other short-term borrowing options or an affordable payment arrangement with the company you owe. For a larger expense requiring longer repayment, compare personal loans. If existing debt is already unaffordable, explore debt counselling before adding credit.

How the MobiMoney account works

Application and withdrawals

  1. Start from FinChoice’s official MobiMoney page and complete the activation application.
  2. Provide the financial information and documents requested for assessment.
  3. Review your credit limit, quotation, insurance and repayment mandate before accepting.
  4. Choose a withdrawal amount and repayment period, checking the resulting instalments and total cost.

The MobiMoney mandate guide says no debit is collected until you withdraw. After a withdrawal, collection follows the mandate’s amount and date. It also describes Registered Mandate Service as an alternative where DebiCheck is not confirmed, so leaving a DebiCheck request unanswered should not be treated as cancelling a repayment obligation.

When the money may arrive

The MobiMoney product page states that approved withdrawals can take up to 12 hours. FinChoice’s general payout guidance, updated on 17 March 2026, allows up to 24 working hours after documents and verification are complete. These sources have different scopes; confirm the timing for your withdrawal before relying on it for a deadline.

Questions to ask before accepting

  • What will this withdrawal cost in total, including interest, initiation fees, service fees and insurance?
  • How much initiation fee remains payable on the facility, and how will another withdrawal affect it?
  • What will my combined monthly repayment be if I make more than one withdrawal?
  • Which insurance benefits apply to my employment circumstances, and can I substitute suitable existing cover?
  • When will collections run, including around weekends, public holidays or an early payday?
  • What charges and account restrictions apply if I miss a payment, and what would early settlement cost?

MobiMoney advantages and limitations

Advantages

  • Small withdrawals can help avoid borrowing a larger lump sum than the expense requires.
  • Free activation and charges beginning when the facility is used can suit occasional borrowing.
  • The public calculator shows a total repayment including interest, fees and insurance.

Limitations

  • Repayment is concentrated into a few months, leaving less room for unexpected expenses.
  • The advertised annual interest rate does not describe the full cost.
  • Repeated withdrawals can keep a temporary shortfall going; compare the combined commitment before drawing again.
  • Access remains conditional. The published terms allow suspension of further withdrawals in specified circumstances, including default.

FinChoice MobiMoney interest, fees and insurance

The published credit terms describe these charges:

  • Interest: Calculated on the daily outstanding balance and added monthly. Your pre-agreement quotation specifies the applicable rate.
  • Initiation fee: Charged in portions as MobiMoney is used, based on withdrawals, until the facility’s total initiation fee has been paid.
  • Service fee: An administration charge specified in the quotation.
  • Arrears costs: Missed payments may attract additional interest, default administration and collection costs.

The individual rand amounts for initiation fees, service fees and insurance were not verified from a current personalised quotation. Free application does not mean free borrowing.

Official R5,000 repayment example

The MobiMoney calculator displayed the following example when inspected:

  • Withdrawal: R5,000.
  • Repayment period: Three months.
  • Monthly instalment: R2,042.
  • Annual interest rate displayed: 21.25%.
  • Total interest, fees and insurance: R1,126.
  • Total repayment: R6,126.

The arithmetic reconciles: three payments of R2,042 equal R6,126. Our calculation puts the additional R1,126 at 22.52% of the amount withdrawn over this three-month example. That percentage is neither an annual interest rate nor an APR. The calculator groups the charges together without itemising each component; your accepted quotation may differ.

Required cover and exclusions

The Personal Protection Plan wording describes mandatory credit life insurance underwritten by Guardrisk Life. For MobiMoney, the premium is calculated per R1,000 of the balance owing from time to time. Confirm the premium rate and benefits in your policy schedule; FinChoice’s application guidance includes an option to submit alternative protection cover for consideration.

Benefits are conditional. The policy excludes retrenchment cover for categories including self-employed people and contract workers. Resignation, voluntary retrenchment and lawful dismissal are excluded events. Death and disability cover also has exclusions, including specified pre-existing conditions. A loss of income does not automatically result in a successful claim.

Is FinChoice MobiMoney worth considering?

MobiMoney’s strongest feature is access to a smaller amount without committing to a longer personal loan. Its main limitation is the combination of short repayment periods and charges beyond interest. Compare the full rand cost for the amount and period you need, then check whether each repayment leaves enough for essentials and unexpected expenses. If repayment depends on another withdrawal, the facility is unlikely to solve the underlying shortfall.

FinChoice MobiMoney FAQs

When would MobiMoney make more sense than a FinChoice personal loan?

MobiMoney offers access up to R10,000 with repayment over 1, 2 or 3 months. FinChoice’s separate personal loan offers up to R25,000 over 6, 12 or 24 months, subject to approval. MobiMoney may suit a smaller expense you can clear quickly. If that repayment would be too concentrated, compare personal loan options, checking whether lower instalments justify the longer commitment and total cost.

How does MobiMoney’s total cost compare across repayment periods?

When checked on 8 October 2026, FinChoice’s calculator showed a R5,000 withdrawal costing R5,842 to repay over one month, compared with three payments of R2,042 totalling R6,126. The three-month option reduced the monthly burden but added R284 overall. These are published illustrations, not personalised offers. When comparing short-term lenders, use the same amount and repayment period, including fees and insurance; the displayed 21.25% annual interest rate is not an all-inclusive APR.

Does free activation mean there are no fees when I withdraw?

No. FinChoice advertises free activation and no application fee, with charges beginning when you use the facility. Its credit terms provide for an initiation fee collected in portions as you withdraw, until the facility’s total initiation fee has been paid. Interest, service fees and insurance also affect repayment. Opening an unused account and borrowing from it therefore have different cost implications.

Can I keep making withdrawals without applying again?

MobiMoney permits multiple withdrawals within your available credit, but continued access is conditional. The published terms allow FinChoice to expire the facility from four months after your first withdrawal, on one withdrawal’s notice. A replacement facility requires a new affordability assessment. Access may also be suspended in specified circumstances, including default. This matters when comparing MobiMoney with other credit facilities: an approved limit should not be treated as permanently available emergency funding.

Can I qualify with poor credit, and will applying affect my credit profile?

FinChoice assesses your credit record and affordability; it does not promise approval for applicants with poor credit. Its privacy policy states that a credit bureau enquiry may appear on your profile even when an application is unsuccessful, and numerous applications over a short period may affect that profile. Compare published costs before submitting several applications, and distinguish an illustrative calculator result from an application involving a credit enquiry.

Is MobiMoney insurance compulsory, and does it cover any loss of income?

The published Personal Protection Plan describes mandatory credit life cover. FinChoice’s application guide includes an option to submit alternative cover for consideration. Benefits depend on your policy schedule and employment circumstances: retrenchment cover excludes categories including self-employed people and contract workers, while resignation and voluntary retrenchment are excluded events. Compare both the premium and applicable benefits; an insurance charge does not mean every interruption to your income is covered.

Can I repay MobiMoney early, and how do I check the saving?

The credit terms allow early settlement. Request a dated quotation through the process in FinChoice’s settlement guide, then compare it with your remaining scheduled repayments. That difference shows the saving for your account. Ask for a breakdown of any remaining fees and insurance rather than assuming every charge will be refunded. Also confirm whether settlement closes the facility or leaves it available for further withdrawals.

Does FinChoice offer a payment holiday if I cannot repay MobiMoney?

Do not assume the skip-payment feature advertised for FinChoice’s separate personal loan applies to MobiMoney. Its credit terms make rescheduling subject to agreement. The Promise to Pay option records intended arrears payments; it does not itself confirm a payment holiday or waived charges. Ask for written confirmation of revised dates, costs and credit-reporting consequences. If several debts are unaffordable, consider debt counselling.

How do I dispute a MobiMoney charge or repayment amount?

Contact FinChoice on 0861 346 246 or submit a ticket through its contact page. Identify the disputed transaction and provide the relevant quotation, statement and debit-order details; request a complaint reference and an itemised explanation. For alleged breaches of credit legislation, contact the NCR complaints department on 0860 627 627 or complaints@ncr.org.za.
