Review basis: Researched on 7 October 2026 using Debt Rescue’s product explanation, fees FAQ, application guidance, assessment form and privacy notice, alongside the NCR register and NCR fee guidelines dated 22 February 2018. Debt Rescue provides debt counselling rather than a new consolidation loan. Its fees FAQ gives no pricing commencement date; differences in fee descriptions and payment timing are explained below. No personalised repayment proposal, insurance policy or service experience was assessed. Suitability and comparison comments are editorial assessments.

Debt Rescue debt consolidation review: debt review, costs and restrictions

  • Provider and service: Debt Rescue restructures existing debts through debt counselling. The NCR register lists Neil Frans Roets, trading as Debt Rescue, under NCRDC474. Confirm the registered counsellor responsible for your application.
  • Amounts and terms: No new loan or cash payout. The repayment period depends on your debts and affordable contribution; Debt Rescue says many plans are structured around five years, but individual terms vary.
  • Interest and APR: There is no single new-loan interest rate or APR for this service. Existing accounts remain separate, with any rate concessions subject to negotiation.
  • Fees and insurance: The initial assessment is free. Formal debt review carries application, restructuring and ongoing fees, with potential legal, payment-distribution and insurance costs. Obtain a complete quotation; see the fee breakdown.
  • Eligibility and application: Debt Rescue specifies South African citizenship, stable income, a valid bank account and over-indebtedness. Start through its online assessment or contact team; acceptance depends on assessing your finances.
  • Best suited to: Consumers who cannot sustain existing repayments but can fund a realistic repayment plan after essential expenses.
  • Main limitation: Formal debt review restricts further borrowing and use of existing credit facilities. It is a legal process with limited exit routes, and a lower instalment does not necessarily mean a lower total cost.
Founder perspective

Alexander Balanoff on Debt Rescue

When considering Debt Rescue, I would test the proposed repayment against an expensive month, not just an average one. School costs, car maintenance and annual bills can disappear from a monthly budget even though they still need paying. Ask how the plan accommodates those expenses and what remains after fees and essentials. At LoansPlus, we encourage readers to compare the breathing room their budget retains alongside the repayment term and total cost. A realistic allowance for irregular expenses can matter more than the largest advertised reduction in repayments.

Debt Rescue eligibility and information required

Debt Rescue’s published criteria include South African citizenship, stable monthly income, a valid bank account and over-indebtedness. Its application guidance accepts income evidence from employment, commission or self-employment. The counsellor assesses whether your income can cover essential living costs and a sustainable contribution towards your debts.

Prepare your identity details, proof of income, creditor balances and a household budget. Bank statements and account statements can help substantiate those figures; confirm the precise documents and periods required. Debt Rescue requests consent to obtain a credit report and both spouses’ details where applicants are married in community of property.

Disclose summonses and other enforcement notices immediately. Under section 86(2), as amended, an agreement already subject to enforcement steps under section 130 cannot be included through an ordinary debt review application.

Who should consider Debt Rescue?

Debt Rescue may suit someone whose repayments have become unaffordable across several accounts and who needs structured debt counselling, creditor negotiations and an organised payment plan.

If your existing debts remain affordable and your objective is simpler administration, compare debt consolidation loans using the total repayment, fees and term. For a temporary shortfall affecting one account, ask that creditor about a hardship arrangement. Neither alternative should be assumed cheaper without written figures.

If you have no dependable income or need additional cash, first discuss other options: this service requires repayment capacity and does not advance money.

How Debt Rescue’s debt review process works

From assessment to repayment plan

  1. Request an assessment: Use Debt Rescue’s online assessment form or contact its team. Review the information-sharing and credit-report permissions.
  2. Understand formal entry: Establish whether you are requesting an estimate or making a formal debt review application. Obtain the fee agreement and an explanation of the consequences before proceeding.
  3. Assess and negotiate: The counsellor reviews your finances, notifies relevant creditors and proposes revised repayments. Lower rates or fees depend on what is agreed.
  4. Formalise and distribute: Debt Rescue arranges the legal process for the repayment plan. Its published payment method uses a registered Payment Distribution Agency, or PDA, to allocate your monthly payment between creditors.

One payment does not merge your debts into one loan. Check the PDA distribution statement against individual creditor statements, including balances, interest and fees.

How long does it take?

Debt Rescue’s June 2026 guidance says many plans run for around five years, but the actual period depends on balances, rates and repayments. An assessment is not a confirmed court date or repayment schedule. Ask when your proposal will be submitted, when each creditor will first receive money and the projected settlement date for each account.

Legal protection depends on the stage of the process, eligible agreements and compliance with the arrangement. Defaulting on a restructured payment obligation can expose you to enforcement.

Payment difficulties, contacts and complaints

Debt Rescue’s contact page lists 0861 123 644 and WhatsApp 010 288 1892. If you expect to miss a payment, contact your counsellor immediately with supporting evidence. Its missed-payment guidance says creditor concessions are discretionary; an emergency does not automatically create a payment holiday.

Raise service or allocation disputes in writing and retain your agreement, statements and correspondence. Unresolved debt counselling complaints can be referred to the National Credit Regulator on 0860 627 627 or complaints@ncr.org.za.

Questions to ask before entering debt review

  • Which action makes this a formal application, and what exit routes would apply afterwards?
  • Which accounts are included, and have any enforcement proceedings affected eligibility?
  • What will I pay each month, what reaches each creditor, and when do creditor distributions begin?
  • Which interest reductions are agreed, and what are the projected term and total repayment?
  • What are all charges including VAT, legal work, PDA fees and applicable insurance?
  • How will an income change, missed payment or additional repayment affect the plan?

Debt Rescue advantages and limitations

  • Free initial assessment: Provides an opportunity to explore affordability before committing to paid debt review.
  • Coordinated repayments: A single PDA payment simplifies administration across participating accounts.
  • Negotiation and legal process: Offers a route to restructuring existing obligations without taking a new cash loan.
  • Restricted flexibility: Ordinary borrowing and further spending on existing credit facilities are restricted during formal debt review.
  • Additional costs: Restructuring, aftercare and other applicable charges must be included when comparing proposals.
  • Longer repayment risk: Reducing the instalment by extending repayment can increase the overall cost.

Debt Rescue fees, interest and total cost

Debt Rescue’s fees FAQ publishes the following amounts, excluding VAT:

Charge Published amount
Application R350 once off.
Restructuring Equivalent to the first monthly debt review instalment, capped at R8,000 for an individual application or R9,000 for a joint application.
Monthly aftercare 5% of the restructured monthly repayment, capped at R450.

Clarify the calculation: The NCR’s 2018 guidelines itemise R50 for application and R300 for administration. They use the amount allocated to creditors as the restructuring and aftercare calculation base, and specify the R9,000 restructuring ceiling for consumers married in community of property. Ask Debt Rescue to reconcile its abbreviated descriptions with your itemised quotation.

Payment timing is unclear: The current FAQ says fees are incorporated into the plan, whereas its 3 October 2024 explanation describes the R350 charge as payable upfront. Obtain written confirmation of what is due before the first instalment and how early payments are allocated.

Also request legal or tribunal charges, PDA costs and any applicable reckless-lending assessment charge. These are not fully priced in the short provider fee schedule. Fees included in an instalment still reduce the amount available to creditors.

Illustration of the aftercare calculation

If the agreed monthly amount allocated to creditors is R4,000, a 5% aftercare charge is R200 excluding VAT, below the R450 ceiling. This illustrates one fee only; it excludes restructuring, application, legal, PDA, insurance and other charges and is not a repayment quotation.

Interest and insurance still matter

Debt review does not create a single replacement-loan APR. Obtain the interest rate, remaining charges and projected settlement amount for each account. Compare the full payment schedule, including any debts outside the arrangement, rather than judging the proposal only by its first instalment.

No universal compulsory insurance policy was verified for this service. Confirm which existing credit-life or asset-insurance premiums remain payable and whether any proposed cover is optional or required. Obtain its premiums, exclusions, waiting periods and claim conditions before accepting changes.

Our assessment of Debt Rescue

Debt Rescue is worth considering when you need a workable restructuring of unaffordable debts. Its strongest feature is coordinated negotiation and repayment administration. The principal trade-off is entering a legal process that restricts credit and is difficult to leave voluntarily.

The decisive comparison is how much reaches creditors, when, and at what total cost. Request a complete written schedule and compare it with another registered counsellor’s proposal before committing.

Debt Rescue questions answered

Does Debt Rescue provide a consolidation loan or combine my repayments?

Debt Rescue provides debt counselling rather than a new consolidation loan. Your existing accounts remain with their creditors, while a Payment Distribution Agency allocates your monthly payment under the repayment plan. A debt consolidation loan instead creates a new credit agreement to settle selected debts. This distinction matters: one combined payment through debt review does not mean one interest rate, immediate settlement of existing accounts or additional cash.

Can Debt Rescue help if my consolidation loan application was declined?

Potentially. A lender assesses whether it can responsibly grant new credit; a debt counsellor assesses whether your existing obligations need restructuring. Debt Rescue requires income evidence and assesses your living costs and debts. A declined loan does not automatically mean you qualify for debt review. Ask whether the assessment identifies over-indebtedness and leaves enough income to sustain the proposed plan. Without repayment capacity, restructuring alone may not resolve the problem.

Is Debt Rescue free, and which costs should I compare?

The initial assessment is free; formal debt review carries charges. Compare application and administration, restructuring, legal or tribunal, payment-distribution and ongoing aftercare costs, including applicable VAT and insurance. A published fee ceiling is not your personalised charge. Debt Rescue’s short fee descriptions also need clarification against the NCR’s itemised structure. Use the detailed fee breakdown and request a schedule showing when charges are collected and their projected total over your repayment period.

How should I compare Debt Rescue with another debt counsellor?

Ask both providers to use the same creditor balances, income and living expenses. Compare each account’s proposed interest rate, settlement date, creditor allocation and all fees. Identify which concessions creditors have accepted and which remain assumptions. A lower quoted instalment may reflect a longer term or optimistic negotiations. Also compare access to distribution statements, the named counsellor responsible for your case and how payment discrepancies are investigated. These reveal more than a headline monthly saving.

Will my creditors receive money from my first Debt Rescue payment?

Do not assume so. Debt Rescue’s June 2026 guidance says initial payments cover fees before creditor distributions begin. Request your actual allocation schedule, showing the first payment date and amount for each creditor and how interest or arrears are treated during that period. A successful debit order is not proof that a creditor has been paid. Compare the distribution statement with creditor statements, and obtain instructions for existing debit orders before changing them.

Can I cancel Debt Rescue if I change my mind or my income improves?

A free enquiry and a formal debt review application have different consequences. The NCR’s March 2022 clarification states that voluntary withdrawal is unavailable once you have formally applied in the prescribed manner, even before the assessment outcome. Ending the counsellor’s mandate does not remove debt review status. Improved income may help you repay faster, but the available exit route depends on the legal stage and clearance requirements.

Can I switch between Debt Rescue and another debt counsellor without paying setup fees again?

The NCR’s June 2026 transfer guideline confirms your right to change counsellors. The receiving counsellor may not charge new application, administration, restructuring or legal fees that you have already paid. Outstanding fees for work actually completed and prescribed documentation can affect the transfer. Request an itemised reconciliation and evidence supporting outstanding charges. Transferring changes who manages your case; it does not cancel debt review or restart its statutory timeline.

Will Debt Rescue protect my car and home, and what should I compare?

Eligible vehicle finance and home loans may be included, but asset protection depends on the account’s legal position and compliance with the repayment arrangement. An agreement already subject to enforcement steps under section 130 may be excluded from an ordinary debt review application. Compare the proposed secured-debt repayments, remaining term and any balloon or residual balance. Ask how required insurance is budgeted. Missing restructured payments can expose you to enforcement; reduced instalments alone do not establish protection.

Must I repay my entire home loan before Debt Rescue can clear my debt review status?

Not necessarily. Under section 71, as amended, a qualifying home loan may remain outstanding if the other included debts are settled, the home loan has no arrears and you can demonstrate the ability to meet its future repayments. Ask your counsellor to identify your specific clearance conditions and the evidence required. Clearance depends on meeting those conditions, not simply reaching an advertised number of years. Future borrowing remains subject to the lender’s assessment.
