Review basis: Researched on 13 October 2026 using Debt Rescue’s official service description, FAQs, fee disclosures, application form, website terms and privacy notice. Regulatory comparisons use the NCR’s fee guidelines dated 22 February 2018 and withdrawal clarification effective 7 March 2022. The provider’s fee FAQ gives no effective date. Pricing discrepancies are explained below; no personalised agreement, insurance policy or individual counsellor’s current registration was verified. Suitability and the verdict are editorial assessments, not first-hand service experience or personalised advice.
Debt Rescue debt counselling: summary
- Provider and purpose: Debt Rescue offers South African debt counselling through what it describes as NCR-registered counsellors. The service restructures eligible existing debts; it does not provide a new loan or cash payout.
- Amounts and repayment period: Your debts and available income determine the plan. Debt Rescue describes three to five years as typical, but individual timelines differ and a qualifying home loan may continue after clearance.
- Interest and APR: There is no single loan APR for this service. Existing debts continue to carry their applicable charges; any interest concessions depend on the agreed restructuring.
- Fees and insurance: The initial assessment is advertised as free. Formal debt review involves fees, with legal and payment-distribution costs requiring confirmation. Check VAT and any continuing insurance premiums in the written budget.
- Eligibility and application: Published requirements include South African citizenship, regular income, a valid bank account and over-indebtedness. Start through the official website, telephone or an office appointment.
- Best fit: Someone unable to meet existing repayments who can sustain a reduced payment after essential living costs.
- Main limitation: Formal application restricts further credit and is not freely cancellable. A lower instalment can also extend repayment and increase total cost.
Alexander Balanoff on Debt Rescue
With Debt Rescue, I would focus on how much reaches your creditors and whether the repayment plan leaves a realistic household budget. A lower instalment can offer breathing room, but the settlement dates and fees explain what that relief costs. I would ask how the first payments are allocated and compare each account’s projected repayment period. At LoansPlus, we encourage looking beyond the quoted monthly saving. A workable plan should accommodate ordinary living expenses while showing a clear path towards settling your debts.
Who qualifies for Debt Rescue debt counselling?
Debt Rescue’s published requirements include South African citizenship, stable monthly income, a valid bank account and over-indebtedness. The assessment considers whether you can meet your credit obligations while covering essential household expenses, and whether a revised repayment is sustainable.
Prepare your ID, income evidence, household budget and details of your debts. The online form requests an ID upload and latest payslip, consent to obtain a credit report, and relevant spouse information. Ask what alternative income documents are accepted if you are self-employed or receive commission or a pension. Married-in-community-of-property applicants should expect both spouses’ finances to be assessed.
Disclose summonses, court orders and existing debt-review arrangements immediately. Under section 86 of the National Credit Act, an agreement already subject to qualifying enforcement proceedings may be excluded. An enquiry does not suspend a court deadline.
When Debt Rescue may be suitable
Debt Rescue may suit a household with several unaffordable credit repayments but enough recurring income to fund a workable plan. Its advertised dedicated relationship manager and central payment arrangement could help someone struggling to coordinate creditors.
Reconsider formal debt review if a short-lived cash shortage could be addressed directly with your creditors, or if you cannot fund any meaningful repayment. Someone who still qualifies for affordable credit can compare debt consolidation options before applying for debt review. Consolidation creates a new loan, so compare total repayment and the risk of borrowing again. Comparing debt counselling providers is more relevant when existing commitments are already unmanageable.
How Debt Rescue’s debt-review process works
From assessment to repayment
- Initial assessment: Discuss your income, living costs and credit commitments. Debt Rescue advertises this consultation as free and without obligation.
- Formal application: Confirm when you are authorising statutory debt review rather than requesting an estimate. The counsellor assesses your circumstances and notifies creditors and credit bureaux as required.
- Repayment proposal: Debt Rescue seeks revised arrangements with participating creditors. Ask for the payment, interest rate, fees and expected settlement date for each account.
- Legal formalisation: The proposal proceeds through the applicable court or consent-order process. Obtain a copy of the resulting order.
- Payments and aftercare: A registered Payment Distribution Agency, or PDA, distributes your payment according to the arrangement. Compare its statements with creditor balances and report discrepancies.
The online application includes credit-report consent, signatures and document uploads. Read each authorisation before submitting. Debt Rescue’s privacy notice permits relevant information-sharing with service providers and other specified third parties.
How long does it take?
Debt Rescue’s duration FAQ describes three to five years as typical, not a fixed completion promise. Your balances, negotiated terms and affordable payment determine the schedule. The reviewed sources did not establish a dependable two-hour callback or fixed court-finalisation time.
Its June 2026 process explanation says initial payments cover fees before creditor distributions begin. Obtain a month-by-month allocation showing when each creditor receives money and how interest is treated during that period.
Payment support and complaints
For payment difficulties or service complaints, contact Debt Rescue on 0861 123 644 or use the WhatsApp link on its official contact page. Explain the issue in writing and retain statements and reference numbers. An unresolved alleged breach of the National Credit Act can be referred to the NCR complaints department on 0860 627 627 or complaints@ncr.org.za.
Questions to ask before applying formally
- Who is my responsible debt counsellor, what is their NCRDC number, and does their current entry appear in the NCR register?
- Which step constitutes my formal application, and what lawful exit route would apply if my circumstances changed?
- Which debts are included or excluded, and what payments remain outside the plan?
- What is the complete VAT-inclusive fee schedule, including legal work, PDA charges and any insurance?
- When do creditors first receive payments, and what are the account-by-account rates, settlement dates and total projected repayments?
- What happens if a creditor rejects the proposal or I cannot maintain the proposed instalment?
Debt Rescue: advantages and limitations
- Initial assessment: The free consultation provides an opportunity to examine suitability before committing to the paid process.
- Ongoing coordination: Debt Rescue advertises a dedicated relationship manager, creditor negotiations and payments through a registered PDA.
- Incomplete public cost picture: Its fee descriptions need clarification, and the headline figures do not establish your complete legal, distribution and insurance costs.
- Substantial commitment: Credit restrictions and legal exit requirements matter as much as the reduced instalment. Protection also depends on the applicable process and payment compliance.
Debt Rescue fees, interest and total cost
The provider’s fee FAQ lists these amounts, excluding VAT:
- Application: R350 once off.
- Restructuring: The first month’s debt-review instalment, capped at R8,000 for an individual application or R9,000 for what it calls a joint application.
- Aftercare: 5% of the restructured monthly repayment, capped at R450 per month.
Clarify the descriptions: The NCR’s 2018 fee guideline separates R50 application and R300 administration fees. It links the R9,000 restructuring cap specifically to consumers married in community of property; the R8,000 cap covers single consumers and those married out of community of property. The restructuring calculation uses the lesser of the applicable cap and the defined distributable amount. Request an itemised explanation rather than assuming every joint application attracts the higher cap.
Confirm payment timing: Debt Rescue’s FAQ says fees are incorporated into the plan, while its separate fee explanation describes R350 as payable upfront. The reviewed disclosures do not resolve that difference. Get the due dates in writing.
Additional costs: Request written legal and PDA charges, plus any conditional services. The NCR guideline requires legal fees to be agreed upfront in writing. Including charges in a monthly payment does not make them free; it reduces the amount available for creditors.
Illustrative aftercare calculation
If the agreed aftercare calculation base is R3,000, 5% is R150 per month before VAT. This is an editorial fee illustration, not a Debt Rescue quotation or total repayment estimate. It excludes restructuring, legal and PDA charges, creditor interest, insurance and other applicable costs.
Interest and insurance: Confirm each creditor’s agreed rate rather than assuming interest stops. A longer term can outweigh a rate reduction. No universal compulsory Debt Rescue insurance premium was verified. Check continuing credit-life and asset-insurance obligations; if replacement cover is proposed, compare premiums, exclusions, waiting periods and claim conditions before changing policies.
Is Debt Rescue worth considering?
Debt Rescue is worth comparing when unaffordable repayments require a formal restructuring that your income can support. Its strongest advertised feature is continuing coordination through a dedicated relationship manager. The main limitation is that the public fee information does not establish a complete, unambiguous cost schedule. The decisive comparison is the written plan: living-expense allowance, creditor distributions, total charges and settlement dates, alongside the consequences of formal enrolment.
Debt Rescue debt counselling FAQs
Does Debt Rescue settle my creditors upfront when I join?
No. Debt Rescue restructures existing debts; it does not advance a loan to settle them immediately. Payments reach participating creditors through a Payment Distribution Agency (PDA). Its process explanation says initial payments cover fees before creditor distributions begin. Request a schedule showing when each creditor receives its first payment, how interest accrues during that period and which payments you must continue separately.
What will Debt Rescue charge after the free assessment?
The assessment is advertised as free, but formal debt review carries application, restructuring and ongoing charges. Debt Rescue’s fee FAQ lists R350 as an application fee and monthly aftercare of 5%, capped at R450, excluding VAT. Its pages differ on whether the R350 is paid upfront or incorporated into the plan. Before comparing providers, obtain a VAT-inclusive breakdown of counselling, legal and PDA charges, plus applicable insurance premiums. The fees section explains the published fee descriptions and discrepancies.
How do I compare Debt Rescue’s proposal with another debt counsellor’s?
Compare proposals using the same creditor balances and household expenses. Examine each account’s proposed interest rate, settlement date and projected total repayment, including fees. Ask which creditor concessions are confirmed rather than assumed: a preliminary estimate is not equivalent to an accepted arrangement. Debt Rescue advertises a dedicated relationship manager; establish what that person handles, who resolves payment disputes and what aftercare includes. A smaller instalment deserves scrutiny if it depends on a longer term or an unrealistic living-expense allowance.
Can Debt Rescue help if I am unemployed or my income varies?
Employment status alone does not determine whether a plan is workable. Debt Rescue’s unemployment guidance recognises other income, including rent or a pension, while its application guidance also mentions commission and self-employment. You still need enough income to support a reasonable repayment. If earnings fluctuate, ask how lower-income months are reflected in the assessment. A payment affordable only in your best month is a weak basis for a long-term arrangement.
Can I compare providers before debt review restricts my access to credit?
You can request preliminary information, but establish whether each step is an enquiry or a formal debt-review application. Under section 88, formal application restricts further spending on existing credit facilities and ordinary new borrowing; the restriction does not wait for a court order. Debt Rescue’s online process includes authorisations and signatures, so confirm their purpose before submitting. Compare providers before formal enrolment rather than submitting several formal applications to obtain competing quotes.
Can Debt Rescue include my home loan or car finance if legal action has started?
The stage of enforcement matters. Under section 86, an agreement may be excluded where the creditor has already taken the specified enforcement steps before your application. Debt Rescue may still explore negotiations, but that is different from including the account in statutory debt review. Provide notices and summonses immediately and request written confirmation of which agreements qualify, which remain outside the plan and what legal deadlines still apply.
What support does Debt Rescue provide if I lose income during the plan?
Debt Rescue says it can review your circumstances and approach creditors for temporary accommodation. Its missed-payment guidance does not offer an automatic payment holiday. Report the problem before the payment date where possible and provide supporting documents. Ask who will contact each creditor, whether revised payments require legal changes and whether additional charges apply. Notifying your relationship manager does not itself change the repayment obligation; obtain confirmation of any accepted arrangement.
Can I leave Debt Rescue’s debt-review programme if my finances improve?
Improved income does not automatically end debt review. The NCR’s March 2022 clarification says a prescribed application cannot simply be withdrawn, even before Form 17.2 is issued. Cancelling the service mandate also does not remove the debt-review listing. Ask which lawful exit route applies to your assessment and court status. If you can pay more, request an updated settlement projection and instructions for allocating extra payments without disrupting the existing arrangement.
Must I finish paying my home loan before Debt Rescue can issue clearance?
Not necessarily. Under section 71, a qualifying mortgage may remain after other relevant debts are settled, provided its rearranged payments are up to date and future payments are affordable. Ask Debt Rescue which settlement confirmations and affordability evidence it needs. The Act requires clearance within seven days after the qualifying conditions are met, followed by filing within seven days of issuance. The mortgage exception is a statutory provision, so compare providers’ administration and follow-up rather than treating it as an exclusive benefit.
