Sanlam personal loan: summary
- Provider: Current agreements identify SanlamGoTyme (Pty) Ltd as the lender. The NCR register lists NCRCP22861 under SPL Services (Pty) Ltd, with the same company registration number, 2024/590083/07.
- Purpose, amounts and terms: Unsecured borrowing for personal expenses, from R4,000 to R350,000 over 3–84 months, subject to assessment.
- Interest and APR: Personalised fixed annual interest. Sanlam also displays a maximum APR of 27.29% in an example labelled NCRCP272; its applicability to current lending is unverified.
- Fees and insurance: An initiation fee, monthly service fee and compulsory credit-life insurance affect total cost. Equivalent substitute insurance is permitted, subject to acceptance.
- Eligibility: Sanlam lists age 18+, South African citizenship, a valid ID, mobile number, email address and three months' bank statements showing three salary deposits. Affordability and credit checks apply.
- Application: Apply through Sanlam's official online application, telephone service or another listed SanlamGoTyme channel.
- Best fit and main limitation: Worth comparing for a defined expense with affordable repayments. The broad term range is useful, but mixed public pricing disclosures make the written quotation essential.
Alexander Balanoff on Sanlam
Before accepting a Sanlam loan, I would ask for two quotations for the same amount over different terms. Compare the monthly saving from the longer term with the extra total repayment, including fees and insurance. That reveals what you are paying for more room in your monthly budget. The extra cost may be worthwhile if a shorter term would leave you stretched, but it should be a conscious choice. At LoansPlus, we help readers weigh that trade-off: keeping repayments manageable without paying for more months of borrowing than they need.
Sanlam personal-loan requirements
Prepare your South African ID and three months' bank statements showing three salary deposits. Sanlam also requires a mobile number and email address. Additional identity, address or income evidence may be requested. The reviewed product page does not state a universal minimum salary.
The application declarations ask about administration, sequestration, insolvency, debt review and credit applications made during the preceding seven days. The agreement also requires declarations about financial difficulty and further borrowing. Read these before proceeding.
Sanlam says spouse consent is required for community-of-property, customary or foreign-law marriages. Confirm the documentation applicable to your marriage.
Provider verification: Searching NCRCP22861 in the NCR register returned SPL Services (Pty) Ltd as registered. Its company number matches the SanlamGoTyme agreement. Ask the lender to explain the naming difference if it appears in your paperwork.
Who should consider this loan?
This loan may suit someone funding a specific expense who can repay it without relying on further credit. Compare other personal-loan offers for the same cash amount and repayment period.
Reconsider if the loan would cover a recurring monthly shortfall. For existing debts, compare debt-consolidation options by total remaining repayment, including settlement costs. If current repayments are already unaffordable, explore debt counselling before taking on another commitment.
How the Sanlam application works
Application process
- Start from the official Sanlam product page or call 0860 007 227. Select your requested amount and term.
- Complete the financial information and provide supporting documents for assessment.
- Review the quotation, insurance terms and repayment schedule. Request a shorter-term comparison before accepting.
- Complete the acceptance, verification and debit-order requirements. The published agreement gives quotations a five-business-day validity period.
The lender's privacy notice covers credit-reference checks and sharing with relevant group companies, service providers and other authorised recipients. Review marketing preferences separately from information needed to assess and administer the loan.
Approval and payout timing
Sanlam advertises possible payment within 24 hours after approval, depending on documents. The agreement specifies one business day after all disbursement conditions are satisfied, including verification, debit-order approval and acceptance of substitute insurance where applicable.
Repayment support and complaints
Contact customer care on 0860 997 771 or customercare@sanlamgotyme.co.za if repayment becomes difficult. Send complaints to complaints@sanlamgotyme.co.za, as listed in the official terms of use.
After the provider's complaints process, eligible unresolved disputes can be referred to the National Financial Ombud Scheme, which offers free dispute resolution. Its telephone number is 0860 800 900.
Questions to ask before accepting
- What cash will reach my account, and what is the total repayment including every fee and insurance premium?
- Which interest rate and APR apply to this SanlamGoTyme quotation?
- How much would a shorter term save, and would that instalment remain affordable?
- Can service fees or insurance premiums change despite the fixed interest rate?
- Which insurance benefits apply to my employment status, and what exclusions or waiting periods apply?
- When is the first debit, and how are extra payments, arrears and early settlement handled?
Sanlam personal loan: advantages and limitations
Advantages: A broad advertised borrowing range, terms extending to seven years, fixed contractual interest and the option to substitute acceptable credit-life cover.
Limitations: Public pricing needs clarification, compulsory insurance adds to the cost, and longer terms extend both interest exposure and recurring charges. A smaller instalment can therefore conceal a substantially larger commitment.
Interest, fees, insurance and total repayment
The quotation should itemise the following:
- Interest: A fixed annual rate, calculated daily and added monthly.
- Initiation fee: Payable upfront or financed; financing it attracts interest.
- Service fee: Charged monthly. The agreement allows increases within applicable limits with notice.
- Credit-life premium: Required cover, with the amount and benefits dependent on the applicable policy.
Late payment may lead to additional interest, collection costs, adverse credit reporting and legal action.
Published pricing example: applicability unresolved
The Sanlam page displays an example of R50,000 over seven years at 24.5% annual interest, with a stated total of R102,085.93, a R1,207.50 initiation fee and R69 monthly administration fee. It states a maximum APR of 27.29%, while its calculator displays interest rates of 16%–28%.
These disclosures are not a verified current price range. The example names NCRCP272, whereas the current agreement identifies NCRCP22861. No clear pricing effective date or complete explanation of the repayment calculation and insurance treatment accompanies it. The stated total has not been independently validated; request a current itemised quotation.
Insurance costs and exclusions
The credit-life terms calculate premiums per R1,000 of the loan amount according to employment status. Premiums may be reviewed annually with 31 days' notice. Equivalent substitute cover requires lender acceptance and must name the lender as beneficiary up to the settlement value.
Benefits and exclusions vary. For loans longer than six months, retrenchment or inability-to-earn claims have a three-month initial waiting period; that waiting period does not apply to terms of six months or less. Resignation, dismissal, voluntary retrenchment and previously known retrenchment are among the exclusions. Medical exclusions also apply, and missed premiums can end cover.
The document's self-employed loss-of-income wording is inconsistent with its benefits table. Self-employed applicants should obtain written clarification before relying on that benefit.
Editorial assessment: Compare the actual monthly debit and total repayment, rather than the interest rate alone. Ask how many additional service fees and insurance premiums a longer term creates.
Is a Sanlam personal loan worth comparing?
Sanlam's strongest feature is the range of available amounts and terms. Its main weakness is the difficulty of identifying current pricing from the public disclosures alone. A competitive offer should combine an affordable instalment with a reasonable total repayment. Compare the written SanlamGoTyme quotation with another lender's equivalent offer before deciding.
Sanlam personal-loan FAQs
Which Sanlam interest rate should I use when comparing lenders?
Use the rate in your current SanlamGoTyme quotation. Sanlam's public page displays calculator rates alongside an example labelled NCRCP272, while current agreements identify NCRCP22861. The example's 27.29% maximum APR has not been verified as applicable to current lending. Ask for your annual interest rate, APR and total repayment; these figures measure different aspects of cost.
How can I tell whether Sanlam's offer is cheaper than another personal loan?
Compare quotations for the same cash amount received and repayment term. Check whether the initiation fee is financed, whether insurance is included in the displayed instalment, and whether any costs are payable separately. A lower interest rate can still produce a higher overall cost. Use the total repayment alongside monthly affordability when comparing personal-loan providers.
Is Sanlam's unsecured loan preferable to secured finance?
Sanlam does not require a car or property as security for this personal loan. That can suit expenses without an asset to finance, but it does not establish a cost advantage. For a vehicle purchase, compare a Sanlam quotation with vehicle finance, including any deposit, balloon payment, insurance requirements and total repayment. Secured finance also places the financed asset at risk if repayments are missed.
Can I apply if I am self-employed or do not receive a monthly salary?
Sanlam's published checklist requires three months' bank statements showing three salary deposits. It does not clearly explain which alternative income evidence is accepted. Although the insurance document lists self-employed customers, that alone does not establish loan eligibility. Confirm both the application requirements and applicable loss-of-income cover; the published insurance wording contains inconsistencies affecting self-employed borrowers.
Can I apply to Sanlam while comparing offers from other lenders?
The Sanlam application asks you to confirm that you have not made another credit or loan application during the preceding seven days. This matters when shopping around. Ask whether another provider's quotation request counts as a credit application, and disclose recent applications to Sanlam before continuing. Do not assume that obtaining an estimate and submitting a formal application are treated identically.
Does Sanlam's fixed interest rate mean my monthly debit cannot change?
No. The published agreement specifies fixed annual interest but allows service-fee increases within applicable limits with notice. Insurance premiums may also be reviewed annually. Ask which parts of the quoted debit are fixed and how changes would affect your repayment schedule. A fixed interest rate does not make every charge fixed.
Can I use my own credit-life insurance to reduce the cost?
SanlamGoTyme requires credit-life insurance but permits equivalent substitute cover, subject to acceptance. The lender must be named to receive benefits up to the settlement value. An existing life policy is not automatically suitable. Compare premiums, covered events, waiting periods and exclusions, and obtain acceptance before cancelling or replacing cover. Substituting insurance at application can also affect payout timing.
When could Sanlam's 84-month term be a disadvantage?
The longer term may make the instalment manageable while extending interest, monthly service fees and insurance premiums. Sanlam's published insurance terms calculate premiums using the loan amount, so do not assume the premium falls with the outstanding balance. Request quotations for two affordable repayment terms and compare the extra total repayment against the monthly saving. The longest available term is not necessarily the strongest offer.
Will extra payments reduce my Sanlam loan balance immediately?
The agreement permits penalty-free extra payments, but allocates them first to due interest, then unpaid fees and charges, and finally the loan principal. Allocated prepayments are not refundable, so retain enough cash for essential expenses. For full early repayment, request a settlement quotation; the published terms require payment within five business days of receiving it. Ask how smaller extra payments affect your remaining term and instalment.
